Jo Rukey To Koh-e-Garan Thay Hum

Jo Rukay To - Faiz

Na ganwa’o navak-e-neemkash, dil-e-reza reza ganwa diya

jo bache hain sang samet lo, tan-e-daagh daagh lutaa diya

mere chaaragar ko naveed ho, saf-e-dushmana ko khabar karo

udher ek harf ki kushtni, yahan laakh uzr tha guftni

jo kaha to sun ke urda diya, jo likha to parh ke mita diya

jo rukay to koh-e-garan thay hum, jo chalay to jan se guzar gaye

raah-e-yaar hum ne qadam qadam, tujhe yaadgaar bana diya

Tanhayee

Phir koi aaya dil-e-zaar! nahin, koi nahin
Raahru ho ga, kahin aur chala jaayega
Dhal chuki raat, bikharnay laga taaron ka ghubaar
Larkharaanay lagay aivaanon mein khaabeeda chiraagh
So gayee raasta tak tak ke her ik raahguzaar
Ajnabi khaak ne dhundlaa diye qadmon ke suraagh
Gul karo shamein, barha do mai-o-meena-o-ayyaagh
Apnay bekhaab kivaaron ko muqqafil kar lo
Ab yahaan koi nahin, koi nahin aaye ga!

Tanhayee by Faiz

Again has someone come, sad heart — no; no one
Maybe a passerby — will go somewhere else.
Night declined, the stardust scatters,
Drowsy lamps waver in the buildings
Every path, after long waiting, sleeps
The unfamiliar dust has blurred traces of footsteps,
Put out the candles, take out wine and jug and cup
Lock up your sleepless doors
Now no one, no one will come here.

Nisaar Mein Teri Galiyon Ke Aye Watan

nazar churaa ke chale, jism-o-jaaN bachaa ke chale

hai ahl-e-dil ke liye ab ye nazm-e-bast-o-kushaad
ki sang-o-Khisht muqayyad hain aur sag aazaad

bahot hain zulm ke dast-e-bahaanaa-juu ke liye
jo chand ahl-e-junuuN tere naam levaa hain
bane hain ahl-e-hawas muddae bhe, munsif bhe
kise wakel karen, kis se munsife chaahen

magar guzarane waalon ke din guzarate hain
tere firaaq men yuuN subh-o-shaam karte hain

bujhaa jo rauzan-e-zindaaN to dil ye samajhaa hai

Gharaz tasavvur-e-shaam-o-sahar men jete hain
giraft-e-saayaa-e-diwaar-o-dar men jete hain

yuuN he hameshaa ulajhate rahe hai zulm se Khalq
na un ke rasm nae hai, na apane reet nae
yuuN he hameshaa khilaaye hain ham ne aag men phuul
na un ke haar nae hai na apni jeet nae

ise sabab se falak kaa gilaa nahen karate
tere firaaq men ham dil buraa nahen karate

Gar aaj tujhase judaa hain to kal baham honge
ye raat bhar ke judaey to koey baat nahen
Gar aaj auj pe hai taala-e-raqeeb to kyaa
ye chaar din ke Khudaey to koe baat nahen

jo tujhse ahd-e-wafaa ustavaar rakhte hain
ilaaj-e-gardish-e-lail-o-nihaar rakhate hai

My salutations to thy sacred streets, O beloved nation!
Where a custom ‘that none shall walk with his head held high’ has been invented
And if a devotee yearns to go on pilgrimage
Then He must walk, with eyes lowered & body crouched in fear

The heart is in a tumultuous wrench at the sight
Of stones and bricks locked away and mongrels breathing free

In this tyranny that has many an excuse to perpetuate itself
Those crazy few that have nothing but thy name on their lips
Facing those power crazed that both prosecute and judge, wonder
To whom does one turn for protection, from whom does one expect justice?

But those whose fate it is to live through these times
Spend their days in thy mournful memories

When hope begins to faint, my heart has often conjured
Your forehead sprinkled with stars
And when my chains have glittered
I have imagined that dawn must have burst upon thy face

Thus one lives in the memories of thy dawns and dusks
Imprisoned in the shadows of the high prison walls

Thus always has the world grappled with tyranny
Neither their rituals nor our rebellion is new
Thus have we always grown flowers in fire
Neither their defeat, nor our final victory, is new!

Thus we do not blame the heavens
Nor let bitterness seed in our hearts (in times of parting)

We are separated today, but one day shall be re- united
This separation that will not last beyond tonight, bears lightly on us
Today the power of our exalted rivals may touch the zenith
But these four days of omniscience (power) too shall pass

Those that love thee keep, beside them
The cure of the pains of a million heart- breaks

Mozoo’-e-Sukhan (Gul Hui Jaati Hai…)

Mozoo’-e-Sukhan

Gul hui jaati hai afsurdah sulagti hui shaam,

Jaane us zulf ki mauhoom ghani chaaon me,
Timtimaata hai woh aaweezah abhi tak keh nahi.

Apne afkaar ki, Ash’aar ki duniya hai yehi,
Jaan-e-mazmoon hai yehi, Shaahid-e-m’aana hai yehi,
Aaj tak surkh-o-siyaah sadiyon ke saaye ke tale,
Aadam-o-havva ki aulaad pe kya guzri hai?
Maut aur zeest ki rozaanah saf-aarai mein,
Hum pe kya guzregi, Ajdaad pe kya guzri hai?

In damakte hue shehron ki faraawaan makhlooq,
Kyun faqat marne ki hasrat mein jiya karti hai?
Yeh haseen khet, phata padta hai joban jin ka,
Kis liye in mein faqat bhook uga karti hai?

Yeh har ek simt par asraar kadi deewarein,
Jal bujhe jin mein hazaaron ki jawaani ke chiraagh,
Yeh har ik gaam peh un khaabon ki maqtal-gaahein,
Jin ke partoo se charaaghaan hain hazaaron ke dimaagh.

Yeh bhi hai, Aise kai aur bhi mazmoon honge,
Lekin us shokh ke aahista se khulte hue hont,
Haye! Us jism ke kam-bakht dil-aaweez khatoot,
Aap hi kahiye, kahin aise bhi afsoon honge?

Apna mozoo’-e-sukhan in ke siwa aur nahin,
Tab’-e-shaa’ir ka watan in ke siwa aur nahin…….

My Poetry and My Muse (English Translation by Ashok Subramanian)

The ashes of a melancholy evening crumbles,
To give way to night, bathed in silver moonlight,
When expectant stares would be rewarded,
My pinings would effervesce, at her gentle touch.

Is it her garb, or the facade of her countenance,
Or a spark that illuminates the murk,
Or through the refuge of her fancied tresses,
Shines ebullient the orb of night?

Tonight, my beloved’s familiar form shall overwhelm,
Her latent kohl-laden stares shall pierce,
With a hint of rouge, Her effulgent cheeks,
Her pearly hands, Ornately embellished with Henna!

Thus the cosmos of my musings, My poetry,
She manifests my soul and every resolve,
Under dark shadows that centuries cast,
What did humanity painfully endure?
Vacillating between abodes of life and death,
Would I endure my unpleasant inheritance?

The abundant hordes, Of alluring cities,
Why merely death inspires their existence?
These charming pastures, Once teeming with life,
Why merely reaps hunger now in fecundity?

The obstinate, abstruse, cluttered hurdles,
That doused the flames of countless youth,
At every stride, A million dreams guillotined,
To illuminate a billion ignited minds!

And thus, There would spring numerous rimes,
The graceful parting of her playful lips,
Ah! The wretched beauty of her material form,
Opine! Is there a greater enchantment?

Devoid of my muse, My poetry ceases to exist,
A poet’s dream, His identity ceases to exist………….
